Dear Members of Congregation Levi Yitzchak,
During this last year a Vaad of Rabbanim was formed to oversee the kashrus in this city. The Rabbonim of the Vaad involved have no financial gain from the inspections and visitations. The Vaad does unannounced visits to establishments to ensure the following points that were instituted in all Vaad approved establishments:
1. All establishments that do any cooking (i.e. excluding bakeries) - Fleishig, Milchig or Parve - have a Shomer Shabbos in store at all times (either Shomer Shabbos owner or Mashgiach/Kosher Appointee)
2. All butcher shops & markets with significant meat sales have Hashgacha Tmidis (i.e.non-owner Shomer Shabbos in store at all times) and freezers and fridge are locked at night by Mashgiach and opened by Mashgiach in the morning
3. Vegetables are inspected for insects by the Rabbi Vaye method that is used by most city Vaadim and national Hechsherim. Mashgichim may only check vegetables if the Mashgiach is approved by the Hashgacha & the Vaad specifically for checking; owner may not check his own vegetables.
Here is a list of the places that are approved:
- Abba's
- Brami’s Pizza –North Hollywood
- Classic Le Palais Bakery
- Continental Bakery
- Glatt Mart
- Holy Cow
- Livonia Market
- Kabob Mahaleh
- Meshuga for Sushi - Pico
- Meshuga for Sushi - La Brea
- Metro Glatt
- Shalom Pizza
- Ventura Kosher Meats
Please realize that there have been changes in the list from the time the Vaad first started; some stores were sold and some are no longer inspected by the Vaad. Please ask the store owner to see the certificate that the Vaad posted. The Vaad is working on adding more establishments. They will keep us posted of any further developments.
