Free Sarah Vanounou, A Long Suffering Agunah

Sarah Vanounou, a young mother living in Los Angeles, is still chained in a marriage that for all intents and purposes ended many years ago. Her husband, Moshe Vanounou refuses to give her a Get despite large financial offers from generous members of our community and even Sarah’s. She needs funds to cover thousands of dollars of attorney’s costs that have accumulated as a result of his litigiousness and use of the court systems in a manner not sanctioned by Halacha or even falling within the realm of fairness and reasonableness. In fact, in some decisions the judge has not refrained from expressing his negative reaction to some of the statements made by her husband. For example, in one decision the judge stated that his “testimony has generally deteriorated from “contradictions and inconsistencies” to outright falsehoods and deception”.

Our community must help defray these costs, protest and offer prayers for her plight. He refused to go to a legitimate Bais Din and initiated numerous frivolous, false court proceedings costing over $200,000. in attorney fees. We urge you to join in the efforts to free her. Her husband, aided and abetted by some members of his family, is treating his wife in ways we as a community cannot tolerate. These behaviors are well outside the pale of family disputes and must be condemned as an affront to our values and the morals of Klal Yisrael.

The Aleph Institute is looking for volunteers who can lein Megillah in prisons near Los Angeles on Purim. If you are interested, please reach out to Mendy Hendel at 786-966-7468.

The Rebbe emphasized that on Purim, the mitzvah of bringing joy to others takes on special importance. For Jews in prison, often isolated from their communities, Purim can be a moment of connection and joy that transforms their experience. The Rebbe spoke about the profound impact of bringing Purim celebrations, such as reading the Megillah and giving Mishloach Manot, to Yidden who are in prison.

Zalman ע"ה Rosenbloom: WE ARE HIS FAMILY.

This upcoming Monday evening, Feb. 24, אור לכ"ז שבט, is Zalman ע"ה Rosenbloom’s Shloshim, the conclusion of the second stage (after Shiva) of a Neshama’s ascent. Our shul will be holding a short farbrengen after Maariv (at around 6:30 PM) in his honor and memory. This is an invitation to his friends and acquaintances to join together to accompany him on his next stage by saying L’chaim and remembering him fondly with our personal reminisces.

Zalman was a regular in the yeshiva (YOEC), had taught in the Cheder and often davened in our shul. This went on for 30+ years, until Covid arrived. His already compromised health forced him to be sequestered and many don’t know him. Those who do, please come for a while and honor his Neshama. WE ARE HIS FAMILY.

The Farbrengen will not be longer than an hour. Please come for a while. Zalman loved a Dvar Torah and a good joke so bring and share one or another... or both.

L’chaim and light fare will be served. There will be sushi served with dips, crackers and chips, etc.
