Kashrus Letter #4

Bs”d

12 Sivan, 5773
May 21, 2013

Dear Members of Congregation Levi Yitzchak,

We would like to thank Rabbi Lazer Teitelbaum, Rabbi Shaya Eichenblatt, Rabbi Reuven Nathanson, and Rabbi Yosef Bodenstein for speaking to our community on the topic of Kashrus.

The following points were discussed at the symposium which took place in our shul before Shavous.

  1. Rabbi Bodenstein spoke about the importance of Bishul Yisroel tuna and the need for a Mashgiach Temidi in tuna factories, to check that every fish has simonim.
He described the process of cooking tuna and how the same pipeline of steam that cooks the tuna can be cooking non- kosher fish, at the same time, at another location in the factory.
  2. Rabbi Teitelbaum described the different types of Mashgichim and their qualifications.  Restaurants and factories have varying conditions and require unique expertise.  If a Mashgiach has the qualifications to supervise a restaurant, that alone does not qualify him to supervise a factory.  Each field has its own specific needs and Halachos.
  3. When one shops at any store, even one owned by a religious Jew, one needs to check the products to make sure they are Bishul Yisroel, Pas Yisroel or Cholov Yisroel.  Many products look alike or get mixed up with other products on the shelves. With some products, the status of the kashrus may often change, so it’s important to regularly check for the Hechsher.  It is also advisable to check the ingredients on the products one is purchasing.  Some products may be mislabeled and may contain dairy without displaying a dairy symbol.
  4. Rabbi Eichenblatt explained the importance of asking questions.
One expects that any reliable Mashgiach working in a factory will be vigilant, and will check with the Rav Hamachshir in case of doubt. Similarly, the consumer should not assume everything is fine, and should always inquire about the Kashrus, especially if there is cause for concern. This applies to restaurants as well as caterers. In addition to investigating the Kashrus standards of an establishment, one most also be certain of the Shechita, and not rely upon hearsay. The more we are actively involved in our Kashrus, the more transparency there will be with the Hashgachas in our city.
  5. Rabbi Nathanson spoke about checking various vegetables for bugs.  He said that many Hashgachas have websites which provide directions and videos on how to check for bugs. What is important, however, is the end result, not the particular method used. Each person should use whichever method he finds helpful so that the food is bug-free. See websites listed below.
  6. Rabbi Bodenstein announced that an independent Va’ad is being set up to oversee the Hechsherim in our city.  A few restaurants under the RCC had an initial inspection, and the Va’ad will continue to inspect those sites until they can put up a notice at each establishment stating its particular Kashrus standards.
  7. There are issues one must be aware of with regard to housekeeping.  One cannot leave a non-Jewish housekeeper alone in the house for an extended period of time, as this can create many Halachic problems in the kitchen.  For example, a housekeeper may warm up her own food in the oven or microwave without the owner’s knowledge. The solution is to either lock up the kitchen or have someone occasionally entering the house so that she is wary of an unexpected visitor.

SUMMARY:

  • Importance of Bishul Yisroel and a Mashgiach temidi in regards to tuna.
  • Inspecting products to check for Hechsher, Cholov Yisroel, Pas Yisroel and ingredients
  • Importance of getting involved and asking questions, without making assumptions
  • Possibility of Halachic issues if a housekeeper is left alone in one’s home for too long
  • Importance of checking vegetables for bugs.

Devar Torah - Bamidbar

The Bumpy Road to Achdus
By Rabbi Shimon Raichik

The Torah says that on Rosh Chodesh Sivan the entire Jewish people gathered at the bottom of Har Sinai. The Gemara says that on Rosh Chodesh itself Moshe Rabbenu did not speak to Bnei Yisroel because they were tired from the journey. On the following day he spoke to them about how they are a kingdom of priests and a holy nation. The following day he told them that they should separate for days in  preparation for Matan Torah.

The Rebbe asks two fundamental questions about this narrative. First, since they arrived on Sunday or Monday, this means that they had only been traveling for a day or two. In those days that wasn't considered a lot of travel; so why were they so tired?

Also, the Jewish people had been counting sefirah for almost 50 days and they were full of anticipation. After all this time, they finally arrived at the spot where they would merit to receive the Holy Torah. The place where they would complete their bond of marriage with Hashem. Imagine it's the big day before the wedding,  because of the excitement how can one sleep? How could they have not been spoken to and told to wait until tomorrow?

The Rebbe explains that their journey was both spiritual not just physical. On Rosh Chodesh Sivan the Jewish People arrived from their spiritual travels to becoming;"K'Eish echod b'lev echod- Like one man with one heart". Until then their journey had been filled with strife, struggles and arguments.

What kind of arguments could they have possibly had in the desert. Was it about money? They were all wealthy from MItzrayim and the booty of the Yam Suf. Was it about food or drink? They had the manna and the well of Miriam. Was it the heat of the desert? They had the clouds of Aharon. None of this was the cause of their strife. The cause was that they were a 'Dor Deah- a generation full of knowledge'. Each person felt that they knew the best way to receive the Torah and was advocating their point of view to the point that it lead to arguments and struggles.

So when did this end? When they realized that we all have a neshama that is beyond our individual feelings and understanding. We realized that we are all really like one big person with one big heart. To go beyond oneself, from one's own feelings and understanding is a long journey, and that's how we became connected as a nation. This is the  meaning of the Gemara. Being tired from the journey means that they had weakened their own sense of themselves and therefore were able to become united with each other.  Because they had reached this level, Moshe Rabbenu didn't need to speak. Because by reaching this level they had accomplished themselves what is necessary to receive the Torah, the entire Jewish people together from the same source.

Kashrus Letter #3

Bs”d

Monday, 26 Iyar 5773
May 6 2013

To members of Congregation Levi Yitzchak,

I would like to clarify some of points that were discussed at the shiur this past Thursday night.

We have to be more wary when we eat from food establishments.

  1. We can only eat at a restaurant that is either:
A: Owned by a trustworthy frum person who is always on location & is certified by a hashgacha that is vigilant in frequently checking the establishment.
B: Has a mashgiach tmidi whom you trust and is himself certified by a competent kashrus org.
  2. We wish to publicly thank Rabbi Langer for his time and effort in arranging for the OU to do a partial review of the situation in Los Angeles. We are trying to organize a full review of all restaurants and caterers from both the RCC and Kehillah. For it to have the necessary impact, it needs to be shared with a third party who will follow up to make sure the recommendations are instituted.
  3. All mashgichim, (even temporary ones), need full training so they know what the Hashgacha agency expects of them.
A simple analogy is the hierarchy of a school. A principal supervises the teachers and insures the curriculum is being followed. In kashrus a mashgiach needs a written guideline for each establishment and oversight to make sure he is following the protocol. The principal has a board of directors whom he/she reports to. The hashgacha agency has to have knowledgeable Rabbonim (who understand the kashrus industry) to report to who insure the standards are kept up.

In closing, by being conscious of the food we eat, we help purify ourselves and our homes. This is the proper preparation to Shavuos, when Hashem chose us and gave us the laws of kosher to set us apart and raise us to a higher state of spiritual oneness with Him.

Devar Torah - Behar-Bechukosai

Yes We Can!
By Rabbi Shimon Raichik

During Lag B’Omer, this last Sunday I was recalling various years of Lag B’Omer as they were by the Rebbe. One year stood out in particular, from 40 years ago, 5733. That year the Rebbe did not come out to the parade. He spoke at the Shabbos fabrengen before Lag B’Omer about what the children should be told about Rebbi Akiva and Rebbe Shimon bar Yochai at the parade.
Many times when we speak, I hear comments such as “You were there” or “What can you expect of me, I never saw the Rebbe” etc.. This is why the Sicha stuck me. The Rebbe asked; who is Rebbe Akiva? He was the biggest Rabbi. The Mishna goes according to his opinion. He had 24 thousand students etc.. We should say to the children that they too can be from those students who lived through the plague and through whom the Torah was restored. This occurred after Lag B’Omer, when the students went forward with Ahavas Yisroel, following in the way of the “klal Gadol” of their Rebbe, Rebbe Akiva of V’Ahavta L’Reecha Kamocha.
A child may ask; what do I have to do with such a great person as Rebbe Akiva. He is a person who reached such heights and accomplished so much, I’m not even on the same map! The Rebbe said to answer the child to begin to look into the life of Rebbe Akiva. What do we know about him? We know that until he was 40 years old, he didn’t even know how to read! He started with aleph-bais at 40.
Another question we may hear is; why do you ask me to change? I don’t come from a family of big Rabbis or Chassidim, my parents didn’t give me the proper education etc. , How can you have high expectations for me, I’m a simple person? Let’s look again to Rebbe Akiva. He was the son of gerim. He had no yichus at all! We know that he wasn’t allowed to be the Nasi because of his background. Nevertheless he persevered and became the great Rebbe Akiva.
Even after all of this, the child may persist. He will acknowledge the lessons that we can learn from the life of Rebbe Akiva in our own lives but he wants a guarantee of success, to be sure that it’s worth all the effort. We tell him, Rebbe Akiva saw no miracles nor did he receive any guarantees. What did he see? He saw water that had been continuously dripping on a rock. It had made a hole in the rock. He took a lesson. If the water can penetrate a rock, so too a head like a rock can be penetrated by the waters of the Torah.
So too we can learn a lesson today in 2013. We can be chassidim of the Rebbe and fulfill the Rebbe’s directives. We can do this; even if our father wasn’t a chosid, even if we didn’t see the Rebbe, even if we are not learners; and we are never too old!
This is also true for the Rebbe’s “klal gadol” to live inyanei geula and Moshiach. One may ask, if he didn’t come in previous generations what can we possibly accomplish? The answer is; just like Rebbe Akiva did not look backward only forward, so too us, we never look backward, we only look forward. Every day we can do a little more to materialize the Rebbe’s vision of the revelation of Moshiach Now!
A good Shabbos
