Creating Positive Change in the Environment
I really believe in the environmental movement right now - it only takes a little effort to make a big difference. (Overheard being said by an Environmental Activist)
By Rabbi Shimon Raichik
This week is parshas Vayera. We learn about the thin escape of Lot from Sedom, the place he chose to live, during the time of its destruction.
Sometimes I see that people wonder out loud t if their Torah and Tefillah have the desired impact. They ask if that extra pasuk or the extra coin to tzedaka makes a real change in the situation in Israel and in the world. They do it, but carry it out more like ‘divrei Kabbala’ something they just do. There is a reason that people ask this question. The reason is that we live in a coarse world, a world that is becoming ever more coarse and rough with each passing day. In today’s environment, striving for ruchnius, having a spiritual life sounds far away, abstract and impractical. If it’s not tangible no one wants to pay it much attention. We still learn and we still speak about what we learn but since our hearts are thick as rubber, nothing penetrates. This coarseness is what is referred to as timtum halev, a stopped heart.
When we look at younger children we see that they have their natural warmth and emunah while older people over time become cynical and view an open heart and enthusiasm as naïve. It’s largely due to the environment. 50 years ago the street was different. The average person had emunah. The Jews from Europe were full of passion and fiery emunah. Today the street fights against Hashem. It’s gotten to the point that if you wish someone a blessed day or say ‘thank G-d’ they give a funny look. In their minds science has all the answers. All of this impacts us, and the way that we think.
We find this in the Chumash in last week’s parsha when Avraham told Sarah as they approached Egypt; “Now I see that you are beautiful”. Why did he first realize her beauty then and not before? It’s because Avraham was a Tzadik and until now he took no notice of her physical beauty. Now, as they approached Egypt a lowly place and as he took stock of the situation and those that they would encounter ahead and he began to notice. The Rebbe learns from this episode the effect that the environment can have, even on Avraham Avinu. The purpose of descent into Egypt was to effect an even greater elevation, yerida l’ tzorich aliya.
In every generation there has always been people with stopped hearts, but never do we see it on such a large and organized scale as today. So what can do we do as a community and as individuals? Can we be effective at changing this situation for the better?
The lesson we can take today in our lives and our situation is to first fortify and then counteract the ill effects of the environment. What is most important is to remain immune while being effective and making positive changes for the good. True, we get our strength through learning the Torah, davening, connecting to the Rebbe and attending a good fabrengen. Still, we also need to get involved, to enlist ourselves as it were. In practical terms it means not to allow a quick review of a Sicha or a quick listen to a recording to suffice. To be real it has to truly penetrate, and to penetrate and become part of who we are we need to learn and then re learn. Not just that, we also need to contemplate that the Rebbe is speaking to us directly, and what he is saying applies directly to our personal circumstances. Then it’s a different story; it’s alive and relevant. Then it’s calling to us waiting for us to respond and implement what the Rebbe is saying by embracing what it truly means in general and most specifically for us today. The result is increased emunah, bitachon and simcha in practical ways each according to his or her circumstances with the help of a mashpia.
Just listening to the Rebbe’s voice helps us become infused with his message of emunah, bitachon, simcha, optimism about Moshiach and positive thinking in general. And then when it’s relearned and applied we have what we need to stay above the influences of today and, on the contrary, be successful in influencing the environment.
This is the difference between Lot and Avraham that we see in this week’s parsha. Lot picked an environment (Sedom) to be effected by and it didn’t work out very well. On the other hand Avraham changed his environment wherever he went! Avraham was a true leader.
The Rebbe once spoke to someone about creating an environment (in Yiddish: “A Chosid mach’t a s’vivah”). The Rebbe then asked him what is the number of people required to make an environment. The man answered that he felt that a minyon, a group ten people would be required. The Rebbe answered that actually the correct answer is one. Only one person is sufficient to create an environment, but it has to be the right person. It must be person who is connected and is filled with emunah and bitachon. Just as it was with Avraham Avinu, who was known as Avraham Ha’Eviri one man who came alone from the other side, another environment, who successfully changed the world forever.
May we merit to be leaders and to be proactive as the Rebbe wants and has taught us through his teachings and through his example. By fulfilling our purpose may we also merit to see the fulfillment of all the promises given most importantly the promise of the true and complete Geula immediately!
A Good Shabbos

Going Straight Forward is the Way to the Goal
By Rabbi Shimon Raichik
This week is parshas Lech Lecha. We need only to look toward the Rebbe’s guidance to find the way forward today. When it comes to safety in Eretz Yisroel the Rebbe’s consistent message is that compromise does not help. The Rebbe spoke against the Camp David accords for security reasons, basing his argument on one quote from Sulchan Aruch; if the enemy comes to your border for any reason, arise and attack them preemptively, even on Shabbos. Today all of Eretz Israel is like a border city. So too with regard to the Sinai, the Rebbe spoke about how it serves as a buffer zone for the rest of Eretz Yisroel and should not be given up.
The Rebbe saw that the Camp David accords weaken us because they began a process of cyclical demands and pressure followed by compromises. These compromises have been harmful to the vital interests and safety of people of Israel and the Jewish people worldwide.
From this we can learn an important lesson in our daily lives. We live in a world of passions and of compromise. We are confronted on a regular basis with cyclical demands and pressure to acquire and have more physical possessions and to look the other way and to compromise in our lifestyle. As we see in Israel these compromises do not bring us to the desired result. There are knives in the streets. So too within ourselves, these compromises over time turn against us and endanger the fundamental purposes of our lives and our service of Hashem.
There are tests in every generation. We are all called upon to repeat Avraham Avinu’s journey of Lech Lecha in our own personal way. To leave our land ‘artzecha’, to go beyond our personal will and desires (artzecha is similar to ratzon-will), from ‘moladetecha-your birthplace’ which refer to our natural inborn comforts which includes the comfort of giving in, and from our father’s house which refers to the limits of our intellect. To go to the place where Hashem wants us to be, and then it will be a bracha.
There is a story from Rabbi Shalom Ber Gordon of Maplewood NJ who brought two boys who were preparing for their Bar Mitzvos from his Talmud Torah to the Rebbe for a yechidus. The Rebbe asked each one of them if they were planning on continuing with Talmud Torah after their Bar Mitzvah. They said that they wouldn’t be continuing. When the Rebbe asked why they answered because none of their friends were attending. The Rebbe asked each one of them separately what he’s learning. The first one answered that he was learning about Noach who was a Tzadik and how Hashem asked him to make the Teva. Because he did that the world was saved. The second one said that he was learning how Avraham stood up against his father and broke all the idols in his store. The Rebbe replied to them that if Noach would give into everyone on his block and Avraham would give into everyone on his block (meaning give in to peer pressure) we wouldn’t be here today.
May Hashem give each and every one of us the strength and the abilities to do what He wants of us and may we merit together the immediate revelation of Moshiach Now!
A Good Shabbos

HOW THE REBBE RESPONDED TO TERRORIST THREATS
On the 28th of Nissan, 5750 (April 23, 1990) the Rebbe was notified that P.L.O. terrorists were threatening to attack various targets throughout the world. The following is the Rebbe's response, freely translated:
"I was notified that the P.L.O. has given instructions to all its branches worldwide to strike at targets throughout the world, G-d forbid.
"It is therefore necessary to invoke and emphasize the blessings from G-d to all Jews in all places, in all their needs. Primarily the most needed blessing is the miracle of the complete and perfect Redemption through Moshiach (whom we await every day that his coming not be delayed even as much as the blink of an eye). These blessings should be emphasized with complete trust and confidence, as well as with joy and gladness of heart.
"We should especially fulfill the directive of the Chabad Rebbes, 'Think good and it will be good.' "This means that thinking positively causes the course of events to actually turn out good.
"This information should be utilized not to scare anyone, G-d forbid, but rather in the positive sense, to enhance the service of the Jewish people in the study of Torah and the observance of mitzvot.
"On the verse (Gen. 27:22), 'The voice is the voice of Jacob,' our Sages tell us that the power of the Jewish people is with 'our mouth.' Through our heartfelt prayers and Torah learning we can eliminate the plans of 'the hands of Esau,' the terrible schemes of our enemies."Thus there should be additional activities in Torah study and prayer and in mitzvot in general.
"Special emphasis should be placed on studying Torah diligently. For our Sages explain the verse, 'If you will follow my statutes' to mean that if you will labor in Torah... 'I will grant peace in the land. You will sleep without fear.' "Through Torah study we eliminate all negative things and they are even transformed to good.
"Also, additional prayers should be said. Keeping with the spirit of 'thinking positive' it would be advisable to recite daily an extra three chapters of Psalms. One of these three chapters should be the final chapter of Psalms (ch. 150) which concludes with the verse, 'Let every being that has a soul praise G-d.' This means that every man, woman and child praises and gives thanks to G-d for His benevolence, and for the blessings and good fortune that He bestows upon us and will continue to bestow upon us.
"It would also be appropriate to add in the giving of charity.
"Although 'fasting' is out of place (especially in the context of 'thinking positive') this does not contradict the giving of charity to redeem a fast. "It would be appropriate to give charity in the amount of two meals, and even better in the amount of three meals. This charity should preferably go to support people who learn Torah or institutions involved in disseminating Torah.
"Certainly these directives will be publicized in all Jewish communities, to all Jews, men, women and children.
"Emphasis must be placed however, to be very cautious not to scare anyone, G-d forbid. Rather, the purpose is to inspire everyone to enhance his/her Torah study and mitzvah observance, with truebitachon, complete trust and confidence in G-d, with joy and a glad heart.
"The main thing is that the resolutions regarding the above should hasten and quicken the concept of 'think good and it will be good' in actuality starting from the ultimate good -- the complete and perfect Redemption through Moshiach."
