Two Stories about the Rebbe in preparation for Yud Shevat
By Rabbi Shimon Raichik

As we approach Yud Shevat it is customary to prepare and increase our connection to the Rebbe by learning his Sichos and Maamarim and telling stories about him. The following are two stories about the Rebbe, one about how the Rebbe edited a Maamar and another about how the Rebbe edited a Sicha.

Rabbi Chaim Shaul Brook told the following story. There is a Maamar titled “Habayim Yashresh Yaakov” which the Rebbe gave out to be learned in preparation for the 24th of Teves 5750-1990. It was a Maamar that was delivered on the 19th of Teves 5748-1988. In the Maamar the Rebbe said that when we keep the Torah we are guaranteed all the brachos. This is true even when we cannot see it in the moment, nonetheless it will be good. Knowing this gives us strength in fulfilling the Torah and mitzvos. Even during this long galus, even though we do not see the end, and we do not yet experience the good and final result from all that we do, knowing what will be gives us strength. The Rebbe removed this part from the edited version of the Maamar.

When Rabbi Yoel Kahn saw that it was removed he approached Rabbi Groner to ask the Rebbe why it was removed since he felt that it gave a lot of strength and encouragement if it would be left in. Rabbi Groner asked late on a Friday afternoon with little time left to print before Shabbos. When he told the Rebbe what Rabbi Yoel Kahn said the Rebbe took the Maamar, put it on the desk and said in a resilient and definitive tone; Yidden need and must have what is good; the good they need must be NOW (not some time in the future).

The second story I heard from Rabbi Leibel Shapiro the Rosh HaYeshiva of the Lubavitcher Yeshiva of Miami.  He would prepare the Likutei Sichos Sicha for it’s weekly publication and then send to the Vaad in New York for further preparation that would then be sent into the Rebbe for editing.

Once in 1974, he sent in a parshas Shlach Sicha from the year 5732-1972 (which was later printed in volume 13 of Likutei Sichos). The main point of the Sicha revolves around the question asked; why didn’t Moshe Rabbenu daven for the meraglim, the 10 spies to live. At that time Moshe Rabbenu davened for the entire Bnei Yisroel, why not daven for the meraglim also? The answer came by first tracing the meraglim’s words of incitement and their effect on the Jewish people. The incitement caused Bnei Yisroel to fight against Moshe out of the fear for their lives. Because they lacked bitachon they went against Hashem but not against Moshe Rabbenu himself. The meraglim however were inciting everyone against Moshe Rabbenu himself. Therefore, it is because of their direct incitement against him that he was unable to pray for them. This is known from the axiom that an accuser (or the accused in this case) cannot serve as a defender. This axiom was learned by the golden calf, the eigel hazahav. The Jewish people used gold in the sin of the eigel hazahav and as a result Hashem disallows the use of gold on the garments of the Kohen Gadol as he enters the Kodesh HaKadoshim on Yom Kippur. When the Kohen Gadol enters the Kodesh HaKadoshim on Yom Kippur he brings atonement to everyone for their sins including the sin of the eigel hazahav. This is the reason he cannot enter wearing gold because the same material that was used to sin (which is now the accuser) cannot be used to defend and bring atonement.

What was the lesson from this Sicha? The lesson is that while we all must daven ourselves for our needs, nevertheless we still need Moshe Rabbenu to daven for us as well. The Rebbe brought out that Moshe Rabbenu can accomplish what we cannot accomplish on our own. He continued by saying that one cannot be fighting with either Moshe Rabbenu or the Moshe Rabbenu of the generation because then he will not be able to help you just as it was by the meraglim.

This was the way that Rabbi Leibel Shapiro wrote up and sent in the Sicha. When he got back the edited Sicha, this last piece, that one cannot be fighting with either Moshe Rabbenu or the Moshe Rabbenu of the generation because then he will not be able to help you just as it was by the meraglim was missing. He asked the Vaad what happened to this part of the Sicha and the following is what they told him.

We submitted the Sicha the way you prepared it. The Rebbe crossed out this piece and wrote next to it the words “not appropriate”. We thought that probably it just needed some editing so we rewrote it and then submitted it again. We received it back with it crossed out again with the comment; this is the complete opposite of the sensibilities and spirit of Chassidus. The paper that it was written on should be burned and it should never be mentioned again. See Chapter 2 of the Tanya. (In Chapter 2 it says that even those who willfully sin and rebel against the Torah Sages still receive their spiritual sustenance and life from them, they only receive it however from the hind-part as it were of their Nefesh, Ruach and Neshama.)

We see from this story that a Rebbe is someone who will ALWAYS help. He is there for everyone.

A Good Shabbos

FARVOS?….
In what merit do we ask?
By Rabbi Shimon Raichik

This week was Chof Daled Teves, the Hilula and Yahrtzeit of the Alter Rebbe. The following is an excerpt from a fabrengen of the Previous Rebbe given on Shevei Shel Pesach 1942. When a chosid prepares to go to a tzaddik to request a bracha, to go to the ohel or to write a pan, he needs to have the following in mind.

“In the year 1825, one of the Alter Rebbe’s Chassidim visited Haditch to daven at the Tziyon of the Alter Rebbe. Later, while the chosid was on his way to Lubavitch, both the Mittler Rebbe and the Tzemach Tzedek saw the Alter Rebbe in a dream. They did not tell each other about their respective dreams. When the chosid arrived for Yechidus with the Mittler Rebbe, the Rebbe told him that the Alter Rebbe came to him and said that this chosid had pleaded too much by his tziyon. The Alter Rebbe then asked the question, “farvos-for what?” Afterwards, the chosid visited the Tzemach Tzedek as well. During the conversation, the Tzemach Tzedek spoke about the topic of “farvos-for what?” The Chosid understood that this question was not a simple matter. (The Previous Rebbe said that he heard from his father the Rebbe Rashab on several occasions about the concept of “farvos”, meaning for what purpose should your request be answered?)

During a Yud Tes Kislev farbrengen, in the year 1892, one of the baalei batim stood up to say l’chaim. He said, “L’chaim, the zchus of the ba’al hasimcha (the Alter Rebbe) should protect us.” The Rebbe Rashab asked him, “farvos-for what?” (For what purpose should your request be answered?)

The fiery words delivered by the Rebbe Rashab during that Yud Tes Kislev farbrengen left a powerful impression upon all those that attended. My teacher, Reb Nissan A”H, explained the meaning of the Rebbe’s words in great detail. The individual that was most deeply affected from the question; ‘farvos-for what?’ was the Chosid Reb Hendel. After the farbrengen we went to the small zal to write pidyonos to bring to the Ohel (in Lubavitch of the Tzemach and the Rebbe Maharash). One could hear Reb Hendel immersed in a form of ‘self litigation’ asking himself repeatedly through a torrent of tears; “Hendel… farovs? Hendel… farvos?” He didn’t actually write a pidyon in the end. When he arrived at the Ohel he spoke simply with a sentiment that his requests should be heard with undeserved kindness and great compassion.  The entire episode affected within him a truly broken spirit. It wasn’t just that he became bitter which would imply that he retained aspiration and thirst; rather it affected within him complete and essential brokenness.

Many wealthy Chassidim; Reb Shmuel Gourarie, Reb Yaakov Horowitz from Riga and others, assembled at the Purim farbrengen in the year 1910, in Mentan. Reb Yaakov Horowitz took a cup of mashke and said, “L’chaim, the zchus of the Alter Rebbe should protect us.”The Rebbe Rashab answered; “farvos-for what?” The Rebbe then said to Reb Yaakov; “Yaakov, do you remember the way you were in Shebitz? When the Shadar (a distinguished shliach of the Rebbe) used to come to your town? You ran through the mud to hear a good word!”

During the farbrengen, the Rebbe asked Reb Yaakov Horowitz, “Why is it that when someone asks you for tzedakah you ask, “farvos?” and just now you bentched that the Rebbe’s merit should protect us and you didn’t ask, “farvos?” It’s known that when a good malach goes on high with a request to a tzaddik for someone’s needs, he is in the world of truth. Emes is also din-judgement. In that place, one cannot just be there because he is a good guy. There has to be a “farvos?” a purpose. In general, a malach has great fear to enter the chamber of a tzaddik. Therefore, I asked you about your request, “farvos?”

Later, the Rebbe told me in a private yechidus that a pnimi – an inward and serious person – always needs to ask himself, “farvos – for what?” The reason is because the Alter Rebbe made that his chassidim shouldn’t be beggars, meaning that they should not receive bread of shame. A pnimi should always have, “farvos” a reason for receiving. Even when he is given things, he shouldn’t want to take it (without a “farvos”).”

When Moshe came with the shlichus to take the Yidden out of Mitzrayim, Hashem informed him immediately the “farvos” the reason that they merited to get out of Mitzrayim. It was because they were going to accept upon themselves the Torah on Har Sinai.

In everything in our lives there is a “farvos”. When we come to the Rebbe we need to tell the Rebbe what we are doing with our time. We need to write to him what shiurim we are giving, what peulos we are involved in, how we are running our homes, about our davening, and what tzedakah we give. This is the vessel that holds the bracha; this is our “farvos.” The Rebbe speaks in many places that a chosid needs to notify the Rebbe about what he is doing. A Chosid is always asking himself; “farvos?”

Devar Torah - Shemos

The Secret Power of a Jewish Name
By Rabbi Shimon Raichik

This week we begin the second sefer of the Torah, Shemos. Shemos  means "Names," because through the events chronicled in this book, the Jewish people and each individual Jew receive their "name," their essential national and personal identities as Jews.

While in the midst of exile, galus, the neshama is hidden along with its ability to perceive G-dliness and how everything comes from and is orchestrated under Hashem’s sovereignty. With this loss of insight also comes the hiding of the neshama’s love and fear of Hashem. In the galus all that is apparent are external appearances. In this state it’s hard to tell apart the life of a Jew from the lifestyles of non Jews (as the Medrash says at Krias Yam Suf: “These served avodah zarah and these served avodah zarah”).

One of the remedies for this concealed state of spiritual slumber is to call the neshama by it’s name. This awakens the essence of the neshama. Chassidim relate in the name of R. Pinchas of Koritz that this is the reason the first name of the Baal Shem Tov is Yisroel, because his mission on earth was to awaken the essence of each and every Jew.

In the parsha we witness the descent of Yaakov's family into progressively more severe physical exile, we can read between the lines and discern their descent into greater and deeper spiritual exile.

As the spiritual and physical exiles both intensified, the Jews were forced to confront their essential identity. The fact that they refused to give up the external trappings of their names, their language and their way of dress, which appear to be  only superficial small and seemingly unimportant  matters, indicated that they still maintained their  inner seed of faith in their essence and their destiny.

Therefore  the first parsha which describes the galus, the spiritual descent the Jewish people underwent and the horrors of their enslavement, is also called Shemos, "Names," to emphasize that the Jew's essence is beyond exile.

With Chof-Daled Teves, the Yartzeit of the Alter Rebbe approaching we are reminded that we are called upon to not only embrace our essence and stay true to it but also bring the neshama’s essential oneness with Hashem down into intellect and emotion. This is the stated purpose of the Tanya, which is described on its front page  as a likut,  a collection of different Torah sources gathered  to explain how it is close to each and every neshama to bring the service of Hashem into one’s mouth and heart to do; to accomplish.

It is for this reason that we beg and even demand the geula. We want the revelation of the essence of every Jew and how the neshama is one essence with Hashem, which is itself the Geula. It was always there, it was only hidden. May we witness the complete revelation for all to see immediately.

A Good Shabbos
